A big THANK YOU to everyone who came. It was a beautiful day and many, many breastfeeding families came to sit on the Capitol Square lawn and nurse their babies and toddlers together. It was so inspiring!

Channel 27 (ABC) news came and did a very positive news segment. Dr. Jill Mallory, who organized this event, stated, “If we are going to increase breastfeeding rates…we need to get everyone in our culture to be comfortable and in support of breastfeeding.” This news segment helped by moving us one step toward that goal. (click the video window on the left-hand side)

Here is the link to the first issue for the Mothers’ Milk Association of Wisconsin (MMAW) newsletter. The organization started here locally to provide babies with donated human milk (DHM). The process of donation is described in the newsletter. There are a variety of reasons why a baby would need donated milk; for example, premature infants, babies or mothers too sick to breastfeed. This life-saving food for babies means lower rates of infection and shorter hospital stays. More and more physicians are realizing the benefits of providing their littlest patients with DHM. Therefore, they are writing the prescriptions necessary to obtain the milk.

The phone number to find out more about milk donation here in Wisconsin with the MMAW is 608-333-4955.

Here also is a link to some articles from the LLLI website about human milk banking, along with mothers’ personal stories, both as donors and recipients of DHM.

Despite rain and cold, we had a great turnout for our garage sale fundraiser. So many mamas turned out, whether by word-of-mouth, email announcement or our website, that it turned into something of a little community event. It feels great to see breastfeeding families coming together to help a common cause….supporting other breastfeeding families. There was a mountain of children’s clothing, as well as lots of maternity, some nursing clothing and lots of toys and books. A little something for each family that came to check out the deals. The $800 that was raised will really help our very small budget. Thank you to everyone who came! These funds will go toward updating our lending libraries, getting the word out that LLL is here to help breastfeeding families and pay for our 7-day-per-week breastfeeding helpline. Here’s a preview of some of the books that will be available in our lending libraries (call ahead for particular books…not every group has each one).

Compiled by Anne Altshuler, RN, MS, IBCLC

Images children see in books have a powerful and long-lasting impact. Book illustrations allow parents and children to point out familiar objects and activities as well as to become acquainted with new people, places and customs. Nursing toddlers take great delight in seeing other children like themselves getting comfort and nurture at their mothers’ breasts. Older siblings of nursing infants also benefit from seeing other babies breastfeeding.

It is relatively rare to find such images in children’s books. At a time when health recommendations strongly support exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life and continued breastfeeding with the addition of appropriate complementary foods until a child is at least one to two years old and beyond, it is unfortunate that our books for children continue to portray bottle- feeding as the norm. This situation serves to perpetuate the public belief that bottle-feeding is the norm, and also to pass bottle- feeding on to future generations as appropriate while leaving breastfeeding mostly unseen and unusual. The more that breastfeeding can be presented as a normal part of everyday life, the more accepted it will become. It’s especially nice to find books where fathers
interact with their young babies in a multitude of ways other than by feeding them a bottle. Some examples would be holding, talking to the baby, carrying in a sling, bathing, changing, reading, singing, rocking, etc. Such images serve as good models for both children and the adults who read books with them.

Some books by breastfeeding advocates get the feeding message right. However, it is not an easy task to write and illustrate a book for children that will last through repeated readings and retain a child’s and parent’s interest over time, let alone become a cherished favorite. When a book appears with good information, good role modeling, fine art work and an interesting, well-told story, it is indeed reason to celebrate.

Here are some examples of breastfeeding being presented normally in children’s books. Many can be found in the local public library.

Thank you for nursing your baby in public.
You are not only nourishing your child,
but the hearts and minds of everyone here.
When nursing in U.S. is more
common and understood, the credit will go
to women like you. I thank you on behalf
of my grandmother who had never
heard of breastfeeding. I thank you on behalf of
my mother, who hadn’t a single soul to support her
nurturing instinct. I thank you on behalf of my
daughters and granddaughters, may
they never think twice when their children
thirst. May they never search for a “secluded
corner,” a dressing room, or a restroom. I thank you on
behalf of every woman who ever was
or ever will be. Have a beautiful day.

Their website states, “The purpose of an international symbol for breastfeeding is to increase public awareness of breastfeeding, to provide an alternative to the use of a baby bottle image to designate baby friendly areas in public, and to mark breastfeeding friendly facilities.”

This is the new symbol which Mothering Magazine is granting the right for everyone to use.

It is similar to the La Leche League logo.

Here are some of the presentations we saw:

Evaluating and Solving Difficult Breastfeeding Problems with Karin Calwell, RN, PhD

Breastfeeding and Safe Co-Sleeping with James McKenna, PhD

Kangaroo Mother Care: Restoring the Original Paradigm for Infant Care and Breastfeeding with Nils Bergman, MD

Breastfeeding and the Law with Jake Marcus, Esq.

A New Paradigm for Depression in Postpartum Mothers: Complementary and Alternative Treatment Approaches with Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, PhD, IBCLC

There is a video montage available on YouTube.com of the conference. It’s just indescribable to explain the feeling of being among so many families who know the importance of a strong breastfeeding relationship with their children. There is another great piece done by Chicago Tonight that is an interview with the original founders of La Leche League and their story of how LLL began. It’s very well done.
